Wire mesh forms an integral part of mortar bed construction as it bolsters the mortar and ensures its resilience. Without the reinforcement of wire mesh, mortar beds are vulnerable to chafing and are unlikely to withstand the test of time.
Offering a range of sizes and gauges, wire mesh is the perfect addition to any mortar bed. The size of the mesh needs to accompany the size of the bed and the gauge is what determines how much strength it has. Wire mesh offers an effective reinforcement solution.
After positioning the wire mesh so that it blankets the mortar bed’s surface area, the layer of mortar is deployed atop it. The wire mesh must be evenly distributed to guarantee an optimal coat of mortar upon installation.
A thick coating of at least 1/2 inch mortar should encase the wire mesh. This sticky layer will keep the mesh from shifting during the construction process.
The mortar, now hardened and dry, conceals the wire mesh within, making the reinforcement it provides to the bed of mortar irresistible and far-reaching.
To withstand the test of time, mortar beds need the reinforcement of wire mesh. Without this extra support, the bed’s mortar would be much more vulnerable to breaking apart and would not be as resilient in the long run.
